DL40N

General & Hardware

Which processor is integrated into the Shuttle DL40N?

The DL40N is equipped with the Intel Processor N150 (Alder Lake-N / Twin Lake-N). It features 4 cores, 4 threads, and a burst frequency of up to 3.6 GHz with a very low TDP of only 6 Watts.

Does the system require active cooling?

No, the DL40N uses a completely fanless heatpipe cooling system. This makes it ideal for noise-sensitive environments and reduces maintenance, as there are no moving parts that could fail or accumulate dust.

What are the memory specifications for the DL40N?

The system features one SO-DIMM slot and supports a maximum of 16 GB DDR5-4800 (PC5-38400) memory. Note that only 1.1V modules are supported.

Storage & Compatibility

What is the maximum height for 2.5-inch drives?

The internal 2.5-inch drive bay supports SSDs or HDDs with a maximum height of 9.5 mm. Drives with a thickness of 12.5 mm or 15 mm are physically not compatible with the DL40N chassis.

Which M.2 SSDs are supported?

The M.2-2280M slot supports both SATA and NVMe (PCIe Gen 3.0 x2) SSDs. While PCIe 4.0 SSDs can be installed, they will operate at PCIe 3.0 x2 speeds due to the processor's architecture.

Connectivity & Control

How do I reset the BIOS settings (CMOS)?

The Shuttle DL40N features a dedicated Clear CMOS button located on the back panel. This allows for a quick hardware reset to factory defaults without having to open the device or use internal jumpers.

What are the functions of the internal JP2 header?

The JP2 header (4-pin, 2.54 mm pitch) is designed for external system control and integration. The pin assignment is as follows:

Pin Function
Pin 1 External Power Button
Pin 2 Clear CMOS function
Pin 3 Ground (GND)
Pin 4 +5V DC output (max. 500mA)

To perform a CMOS reset via JP2:

  1. Power down the system and disconnect the AC power cord.
  2. Short Pin 2 and Pin 3 for approximately 5 to 10 seconds.
  3. Remove the short, reconnect the power, and start the system.

The BIOS settings will be restored to factory defaults.

How many displays can be connected?

The system supports up to three independent displays simultaneously via HDMI 2.0b, DisplayPort 1.4a, and the analog VGA (D-Sub) port.

Installation & Features

Is the DL40N suitable for 24/7 permanent operation?

Yes, the device is officially approved for 24/7 permanent operation. To ensure maximum stability, the use of specialized 24/7-rated storage media is highly recommended.

Which mounting options are available?

The system includes a VESA mount (75×75 mm and 100×100 mm). Optionally, a stand for vertical operation (PS02) and a DIN-Rail kit (PV01) for industrial rack mounting are available.

Operating Environment

The DL40N is designed for an ambient temperature range of 0 °C to 40 °C. Ensure sufficient airflow, especially when the device is mounted behind a display or in a confined space.

Advanced Networking & Connectivity

Does the DL40N support 2.5 Gbps Ethernet?

Yes, both LAN ports are equipped with Intel i226-LM controllers, which support speeds of 10, 100, 1000, and 2500 Mbps (2.5G). This provides significantly higher bandwidth for network-intensive applications compared to standard Gigabit LAN.

Can I use the COM ports for RS422 or RS485 communication?

The left serial port (COM1) is multi-functional. You can switch its mode from standard RS232 to RS422 or RS485 directly within the BIOS setup. The right port (COM2) is limited to RS232 only.

Power & Industrial Integration

Can the DL40N be powered by a 12V source?

Yes, the DC input of the DL40N is flexible. It supports external power sources with either 12V (±5%) or 19V (±5%). This makes it highly suitable for automotive applications or integration into existing 12V industrial power grids.

Is there a hardware solution to force the PC to start when power is applied?

Yes. In addition to the BIOS “Restore on AC Power Loss” setting, there is a physical jumper labeled JP1. If you remove this jumper, the system will unconditionally start as soon as power is supplied, which is the most reliable “Always-On” solution for remote installations.

Can I add mobile connectivity (LTE/4G) to the DL40N?

Yes, Shuttle offers an optional LTE kit (WWN03). This kit includes an adapter card, internal cables, and two external antennas. Please note that installing the WWN03 kit occupies the space of the 2.5-inch drive bay, meaning you can only use an M.2 SSD for storage.

Maintenance & Thermal Management

Are thermal pads included for the memory and SSD?

Yes, the supplied accessories include two specific thermal pads:

It is highly recommended to install these to ensure stable performance in the fanless chassis.

Does the VGA port support Hot-Plugging?

No, the analog VGA (D-Sub) connector does not support the Hot-Plug feature. To ensure the display is correctly detected, the monitor should be connected before the system is powered on.
